Endra enters the Finnish market with major solar park investment

The Norwegian solar power company Endra is starting construction of a large-scale solar and battery park in Hanko, Finland. The project will transform a former parking area for imported cars, into renewable energy production and marks Endras first major investment in Finland.

The construction is expected to begin within the next weeks. The plant is expected to start electricity production in the autumn of 2027.

The Hankoniemi project will have an installed capacity of approximately 34,7 MWp and combine solar power generation with battery energy storage (BESS). It is expected to produce over 35 GWh of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to the annual power consumption of 20 000 electric cars driving 10 000 kilometers per year.

– This project in Hanko is one of the most compelling solar projects we have identified in the Nordics and marks Endra’s first major investment in Finland. This also supports the company’s strategy on becoming a leading Nordic solar power producer through sustainable and profitable projects., says Kristian Gautesen, CEO of Endra.

A new purpose for a previously developed site

The solar park will be built on a 35-hectare site. The land is owned by the City of Hanko, and the project is fully permitted, with grid connection already secured and contracted.

– This is a flagship project in many ways. Hanko combines pretty much the highest solar irradiation achievable on mainland Finland with an exceptional site quality. The project is grid-ready, low-risk, and demonstrates that large-scale solar can deliver clean power at scale in Nordic conditions, says Harri Roto, country manager for Endra in Finland.

A key strength of the project is its responsible land use. By developing the solar park on a previously developed greyfield site, the project avoids impact on pristine nature, biodiversity areas or agricultural land.

– Endra’s investment is a strong signal for Hanko. It brings a new international operator to the city and strengthens our position as an attractive location for energy-intensive business. In addition, locally produced electricity is an important asset for Hanko. This project adds new generation capacity close to our industrial areas, says Simon Store, the Mayor of the City of Hanko.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the project supports energy security and locally produced renewable electricity.

PPA agreement with Faerch Group

The Hankoniemi project has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the world leading food packaging company Faerch Group. The agreement is Endra’s first PPA in Finland and strengthens the project’s commercial foundation.

– We are very pleased to enter a partnership with Faerch Group through this agreement, where we jointly contribute to increased deployment of clean energy and reduce emissions responsibly, says Espen Nilsen, Head of Legal and M&A at Endra.

Under the terms of the agreement, Faerch Group will use the energy to cover ~60% of its electricity consumption in Finland.

– The Hankoniemi project marks a milestone in our strategy to power production with renewable energy across the Group and goes beyond securing electricity; it also supports the expansion of renewable energy capacity and supports the decarbonisation of our operations, says Kilian Braunsdorf, Chief Operations Officer, Faerch Group.
